While shopping for last minute Easter Meal items at Wegman’s, I was strolling down the dairy free cheese section to pick up some Daiya Shreds.  To my surprise, there was an exciting new Daiya product on the shelf.  A Daiya Wedge in 3 flavors. I have tried some other disappointing vegan cheese blocks, so, as excited as I was when I saw this shiny new package, instead of buying all three varieties, I bought two to try.  I am reviewing the Havarti Style Jalapeno Garlic Wedge.

I came home with some crisp small organic apples to try with this new cheese.  The anticipation was killing me.  I have made many attempts at one of my favorite snacks, apples or grapes and a dairy free cheese, none has come close to the real thing.  Being vegan for health and animal reasons, I am willing to sacrifice some of my old pleasures for second best if it means kindness to animals, the planet, and my body.

Can I just say, I no longer have to settle for second best. Daiya has done it again. This cheese is beyond delicious. It is everything I  had hoped for and more.  I shared this with my nine year old daughter who said, and I quote, “Mommy, are you sure this is vegan cheese, it tastes exactly like the real cheese I remember”, followed by, “Can we make fondue and will you put this with apple in my school lunch?”  My husband had the same reaction.  He could not get over how good it was.

Thank you Daiya for your commitment to putting out unbelievable awesome vegan cheese.  It makes being vegan so easy, especially when you are sharing your food with non-vegans.  I really don’t think anyone would be able to tell this was not real dairy cheese.  I hope that everyone's grocery store will begin to carry this great dairy free option.

A few more notes on this super star, it cut and spread with ease,  It has a creamy yet stable texture.  I have not melted it yet, but due to it’s creaminess, I think it will be just fine. It had just the right amount of heat from the jalapeno and the garlic was subtle and just delicious.

I have to hide this in the fridge, because every time I look at it I want some. I am so excited that our holiday’s can now include cracker and cheese plates again.

Even if you are not vegan, you can enjoy this cheese product, knowing this is it hormone free, cholesterol free, gluten free, soy free, dairy fee and half the saturated fat of its animal based counterpart.  I encourage you to try some soon, cheese lovers will not be disappointed.

Here are some of the stats on this new wonder product from Daiya’s website:
